Graffiti continues to cost city
Each year North Shore City Council spends hundreds of thousands of dollars cleaning up after vandals who tag buildings, parks, signs and bus shelters.
But the cost and the problem do not stop there.
"Our city's six community boards also give out a total of $38,000 a year to voluntary groups D'tag, Wipeout and Untag to help remove graffiti from private properties," says North Shore City community liaison manager, Lisa Tocker.
"Summer holidays are always a troublesome time, and this year has been no exception."
In particular there has been a spate of tagging with black spray paint of council facilities, shops, bus shelters and at the beachfront in Browns Bay.
"We keep our city looking good by removing tagging on council facilities and private properties, but businesses are responsible for themselves," says Lisa Tocker.
"The key catching the culprits and to effective prevention is working together and sharing information with the community and police."
