New culvert to reduce flooding in Campbells Bay
Work is to start shortly on a new stormwater culvert in Beach Rd, Campbells Bay.
The 3.5 metre wide by 2.2 metre high rectangular concrete culvert is designed to greatly reduce the chance of flooding of the Campbells Bay stream, which flows from Centennial Park and beneath Beach Rd to Huntly Rd.
The $800,000 project, due to start toward the end of this month and take four months, is a part of Project CARE, North Shore City Council's 20-year, $210 million plan to improve stream and beach water quality.
There will be some disruption to vehicle and pedestrian traffic during each of the three construction stages running from February 23 to mid-May this year.
Project team manager - stormwater, Viv Eyberg, says traffic management plans will be put in place to help direct traffic around the construction site, and he is asking motorists to be especially careful, as detours will change as work progresses. Motorists should take alternative routes if possible.
The new culvert will run beneath Beach Rd, and will be built within a wide trench that will be dug for the task, then backfilled.
Mr Eyberg says the first stage will involve the closure of the lower end of Beach Rd where it runs into Huntly Rd; the second stage closes one side of Beach Rd by Huntly Rd, and the third stage closes the other side of Beach Rd.
He says council engineers first considered doing the work only between 9 am and 3pm, but instead contractors will work over a full 12-hour day to reduce the overall construction time, disruption to traffic, and so work can be completed before winter.
The existing 1.8m diameter culvert will be retained, and the new culvert, a total of 55 metres long, should accommodate the flow after torrential downpours.
Most of the trees on the street reserve will be protected and retained during the work, and additional trees and shrubs will be planted once work is finished.
