United Networks/Vector Ltd -Tree Wreckers and Haters

"Yesterday, to my knowledge the only remaining tree fuscia in Karekare was felled, along with a multitude of other trees and tree ferns. Some of these were at least 80 years old if not older.

This is despite strict regulations as to cutting native bush particularly of this quality.

In all other circumstances, a plan would have had to have been drawn up and a resource consent applied for. Many people profess a love for Karekare, I would have thought it would be the one place the lines company along regional authories, would have considered undergrounding the lines to both save the bush, and safeguard the supply from the bush, one of the reasons we are told this wanton destruction is necessary.

Personally, the destruction and scars up and down Lone Kauri Rd hits even harder , as it is right through the site of a major forest restoration project, the Lone Kauri Forest Restoration Trust. As I look down off the road, to see the now exposed baitstations ,that used to be hidden under a deep and rich canopy, my heart sinks.I am a volunteer that have sacrificed countless hours over the last few years to restore the forest health and birdlife in Karekare..

Lines companies and their associates have and continue to ride carte blanche over environmental considerations, stop them in your area before its too late."
