Marlborough Sounds rescue of a sick 10 year old
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was
called to the Marlborough Sounds to rescue a sick 10 year
old boy just after midnight today.
The 10 year old Palmerston North boy was on a school camp at Kiwi Ranch, in Curious Cove, when he began suffering from a pre-existing medical condition.
Doctors were very concerned for his well being and requested that he be evacuated to Wellington as soon as possible.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was requested a couple of minutes after midnight and was enroute to the Marlborough Sounds, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, 20 minutes later.
"It was a relatively clear night but getting into a bay in the Sounds at night is still tricky, even with our 30 million candle power Nitesun spotlight" says Jon Leach, Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman. "The people at Kiwi Ranch did a great job of lighting up the landing area and once we were overhead the camp our pilot worked his way down slowly - he did a great job".
The 10 year old was taken to
Wellington Hospital's Emergency Department in a stable
condition where he was being assessed and treated. His
parents were on their way from Palmerston North to meet him
at hospital.
