Drive-by and help clear the air

Drive-by and help clear the air

6 May 2005

The Auckland Regional Council will be launching a drive-by emissions monitoring campaign this week to help Aucklanders improve the alarming quality of Auckland’s air.

Up to 80% of Auckland’s air pollution is from vehicle emissions which causes over 250 premature deaths every year and contributes to serious health effects such as cardio-respiratory problems, cancer and increased asthma attacks.

Over the next six weeks Aucklanders will have an opportunity to find out if their own car emissions are contributing to Auckland’s air pollution problem.

ARC Environment Management Chair, Dianne Glenn, says emissions from a poorly maintained car can be up to 50 times worse than from a well maintained car.

“The campaign is designed to encourage car owners to tune their car at least once a year, and diesel car owners every six months. When the car drives past the monitor, a flashing sign will indicate if their emissions are good, fair or poor,” she says.

“The ARC will write letters to those whose emissions are poor and offer them a 10% discount at selected MTA members if they join the Big Clean Up. New members will also go into a draw to be reimbursed the cost of a tune up and repairs to a maximum value of $500.”
As part of the campaign the ARC, in association with Transit New Zealand, has placed billboards on 25 motorway off-ramps, encouraging motorists to tune their vehicles.

Details of where the monitor will be located can be found on HYPERLINK "http://www.arc.govt.nz" www.arc.govt.nz. Dates are subject to weather conditions.
