Unique Fundraiser for Kiwi
‘Ave an Art for Kiwi
An exciting event is planned for the weekend of the Environmental Expo, 30 and 31 July. Local artists are teaming up with Orongo Bay Homestead on a fundraiser for the Russell Kiwi Project.
The walls and gardens of Orongo Bay Homestead will be decorated with the artworks of local artists, who are donating the proceeds of their work to the Kiwi Project.
“We heard that the Kiwi Project needed funds, or it might be jeopardised,” said Nora Grieve. Nora is a member of the Palette Artists, a group that exhibits in Russell each January. Known for her stunning paintings on silk, Nora’s other favoured media is water colours.
Cherry Lawrie, who works in watercolours and pastels but is perhaps most well known for her beautiful hand-painted china, was also excited about the project.
“It’s a great idea, and an excellent cause. I’m sure local artists will get right behind it,” she said.
Chris Swannell and Michael Hooper, owners of Orongo Bay Homestead, are providing finger food for the patrons, who will be paying $20 a ticket to come to the show. Purchases will be by silent auction; each work will have a ‘score card’ next to it which will show the reserve on the individual piece and the current bid.
“We’re planning refreshments featuring organic produce, most of which will be sourced locally,” said Michael. “We hope locals and visitors will support this worthwhile event.”
“It’s also a fun opportunity to acquire some great art, knowing that we are also helping to save our endangered national icon.”
