Changes to road layout in Browns Bay

Temporary changes will be made to traffic flows along Anzac Rd in Browns Bay over the next few months, while a new sewer is installed beneath the road.

The sewer is being installed by tunnelling to minimise disruption to the community and environment.

North Shore City wastewater network projects manager Dave Woods says barriers and steel surface plates will be set out along the road in phases to prevent traffic being affected by small ground settlements that may occur during the tunnelling process.

North Shore City Council is installing the new trunk sewer beneath the length of Anzac Rd in Browns Bay, as part of the council's $12 million Browns Bay Trunk Sewer Upgrade project.

This work, part of the council's Project CARE programme to reduce sewage overflows onto North Shore City's beaches, is expected to begin in early July.

"The barriers/steel plates system will be installed in phases as the tunnelling machine progresses along its route beneath the road, to minimise the effect on traffic," Mr Woods says.

"The barriers will be removed once the tunnelling machine has passed and ground conditions above the tunnel checked. We expect the barriers will be present in each location for around two weeks to one month."

Road and footpath access to all businesses and residential properties will be maintained throughout the work. However, when the barriers/steel surface plates are present in each phase, right-hand turns may not be possible and car parking spaces along the edge of Anzac Rd in that location will be unavailable.

All changes will be clearly signposted.

The council is replacing the old, smaller trunk sewers with large 2.1m diameter sewers, which will cater for future growth in the area and significantly reduce overflows onto North Shore beaches during wet weather.
