North Shore City's young people get in the Zone
North Shore City's latest indoor recreation venue where young people can meet, hang out, play or get active is about to open.
ActivZone in Glenfield includes a rink with an all-purpose surface for skating and other sports, two game zones, a skate hire booth and a café.
North Shore City Council's community services and parks committee chairperson, Margaret Miles, says the ActivZone is a great addition to the area's facilities.
"It's located in an excellent spot - alongside our Glenfield Leisure Centre, close to the mall and on a good bus route - and provides an excellent range of activities," she says.
The council bought the former Skatelands building at 30 Downing St for $1.4m, and after extensive consultation with the community, refurbished it into a recreation facility with a focus on young people.
The multi-purpose sports floor, which covers the rink and is believed to be the first of its kind in New Zealand, will be used casually for skating, inline hockey training and games, and other organised indoor sports including soccer and mini ball.
One game zone will have pool and air hockey tables, as well as couches for relaxing, and the other will have Xbox consoles and big screens, with games changing monthly. "Everyone can use the ActivZone and we certainly hope they will come and try it out, but the focus really is on youth," says Councillor Miles.
"Along with our leisure centres, the ActivZone gives people in North Shore City a range of community recreation options, so they can keep fit or just enjoy some time out."
From 10am at the official opening of the ActivZone on Saturday, August 13, people can try out the different activities. Entry will be free, but there will be a $3 skate hire charge.
Outside the building radio station More FM will be broadcasting live and giving out spot prizes and hot dogs, and the Xbox ute means people can try out the games before they even get inside.
Inside ActivZone the game zones will be open, and there will be plenty of action on the rink. A highlight will be six-a-side soccer featuring celebrity players from the New Zealand Knights, including All White star Noah Hickey.
Sporting demonstrations by the Blackhawks and the New Zealand Lacrosse team will also be on from 1 - 3pm.
