Supermarket Chiefs Face Up To North Shore Residents

More than 150, mostly angry, North Shore residents attended a meeting in Glenfield this afternoon to hear the chief executives of Foodstuffs {Pack 'n Save} and Progressive Enterprises (Foodtown, Woolworths & Countdown) state their positions on the stalled Pak 'n Save Supermarket in Wairau Rd.

The meeting was organised by this Association in response to concerns by many residents who felt that Progressive was using the Resource Management Act to maintain a competitive advantage.

Association chairman, David Thornton, put two motions to the meeting which were supported by the overwhelming majority of those attending.

The motions approved were;-

1. This meeting calls on the incoming Government to change the Resource Management Act to

a. prevent trade competitors using the Act to achieve commercial advantage. b. ensure that only those who will be directly affected shall have the legal right to object to resource consent applications

2. This meeting calls on Progressive Enterprises and Northcote Mainstreet to withdraw from any further participation in the Pak 'n Save issue and calls on Transit NZ and Pak 'N Save to urgently address the traffic issues arising from the development.

The first motion will be addressed to leaders of the political parties and to local MPs.

The second motion will be sent to all the parties involved in the current legal battle, and to Transit New Zealand.
