Survey to shed light on traffic problems

A comprehensive survey of businesses and residents is helping identify solutions to the traffic problems within the North Harbour Industrial Estate.

North Shore City Council is consulting with local businesses, and employees and residents will add their views when an online travel survey goes live on September 5.

The council aims to survey as many people as it can, living and working in the area. It is the first time in New Zealand an exercise of this type has been carried out in a commercial zone.

There has been growing concern about the traffic congestion within the estate, and the council has teamed up with its regional partners and local business leaders to tackle the problem.

The information it is seeking will be essential to the success of the long-term project, says North Shore City's manager of transport operations and support services, Tom Morton.

"We want to know more about the community's travel needs and wants, so that we can give people a range of options that work for them," he says.

The online survey will gather information about the nature of local business and the travel habits of workers and residents, and identify problem areas.

All those wishing to take part in the survey should visit the council's website at www.northshorecity.govt.nz or call Actionline on 486 8600 to request that a printed questionnaire be sent to them.

Possible solutions to the area's traffic problems include providing additional infrastructure to support sustainable travel, and selling the benefits of changing how people travel.

"Developing the right solutions is crucial to the future of the area, and the bigger response we get, the better equipped we will be to do the job properly," says Mr Morton.

The area in question is bordered by State Highways 1 and 18, the Albany Highway, and Rosedale Rd.
