Devonport to Takapuna cycle route wins support

Devonport to Takapuna cycle route wins community support

September 21, 2005

More than 350 feedback forms have been received in response to North Shore City Council's public consultation survey on the Devonport to Takapuna on-road cycle route.

Of the 358 responses received, 71% supported the Lake Rd cycle lanes proposal, and offered valuable feedback about the options for various locations along the route.

"A heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the survey," says Councillor Chris Darby, deputy chairman of North Shore City's infrastructure and environment committee and member of the Devonport Community Board.

"Consultation results were reported to our community board last week, which tabled its support for the staged establishment of 3.6km of cycle lanes along Lake Rd, from Hauraki Corner to the Devonport Fire Station, subject to approval of detailed design work.

"The resolution reaffirms the Devonport Community Board's endorsement of North Shore City's Strategic Cycle Plan and Cycle Implementation Plan. It also recognises there is a need to provide cyclists with a safe and direct route to work or school.

"Research tells us 40 per cent of morning traffic congestion is education-related. The proposed Lake Rd cycle route would provide a safer cycling choice for many of the 3,000 plus school children attending schools along the route and assist with traffic decongestion.

"The survey results reflect that Navy personnel living in Bayswater and Belmont are big supporters of the cycle route proposal, as are the increasing number of cyclists connecting to the peninsula's three ferry services," says Chris Darby.

Design for the Lake Rd cycle route will be reviewed by a working party comprising council and community board representatives, schools, property owners, business associations, the Navy and cycle advocates.
