Hundreds Muck in to Give Otara a Spring Clean
Over 200 members of the Otara community rolled up their sleeves earlier this month to spring clean local reserves along the Otara Creek and Otara Lake to the delight of the Otara Community Board and Manukau City Council staff.
Deputy Chair of the Otara Community Board, Mary Gush says:
“Once again the Otara community has come up trumps. The spring clean-up was a great example of residents, church leaders, Manukau City and Auckland Regional Council staff working together to produce an excellent result and having a great time.”
Over 4 tonnes of rubbish including paper food wrappers, plastic bottles, shopping trolleys, baby strollers, motor vehicle parts and bicycles were removed from local waterways.
The clean-up is the start of an on-going campaign to reduce the amount of litter in Otara’s streams and reserves.
The Community Board would like to see all Otara residents continuing to play their part in keeping their waterways clean by returning shopping trolleys to supermarkets, putting out their refuse in the weekly rubbish collection and making use of the annual free inorganic collection provided by Council.
Residents are urged to call Auckland Regional Council’s 24 hour Water Pollution Hotline – phone 377 3107 - to report stream pollution incidents and Manukau City Council’s 24 hour Call Centre - phone 262 5104 - to report rubbish dumping in streams and on reserves.
“On behalf of the Board I would like to thank all of the volunteers. Thanks to Housing New Zealand for supplying the barbeques, Jack’s Wholesale Meats for donating sausages, Manukau Water for providing the bottled water and Excell Corporation Limited staff for carting away the tonnes of litter collected” added Ms Gush.
