Approval for taxis to use North Shore City's transit lanes
North Shore City Council last night paved the way for taxi drivers to beat traffic congestion by using transit lanes.
Councillors' decision acknowledged that taxis are an important part of the passenger transport fleet, says mayor George Wood.
"This is recognition that taxis perform an essential service in our community.
"Government laws introduced earlier this year prompted our review of transport-related bylaws, and presented us with an opportunity to redefine rules related to High Occupancy Vehicle and transit lanes," says Mr Wood.
Until now, North Shore City's only transit lane, down Onewa Rd, has been available to buses, cyclists, and motorists with three passengers or more, but not for taxis.
The new exemption for taxis will also apply to future transit lanes in North Shore City, including Constellation Drive, Shakespeare Rd and Forrest Hill Rd.
