Honouring our community heroes

Honouring our community heroes
October 27, 2005

Now is the time to let those who work tirelessly in our community know how much their time and effort is truly appreciated.

Nominations for the 2005 North Shore City Civic Awards open on Monday, October 31, and this year the nomination period has been extended into January.

There are two other changes - two youth awards are being given instead of one, and awards can now be given posthumously.

Mayor George Wood says adding another youth award shows just how much young people do to help people in our community.

"It's important that we thank these people who selflessly take time out of their no-doubt already busy lives," he says.

"We're extremely lucky in North Shore City to have such a strong volunteer network."

Since they began in 1990, more than 250 Civic Awards have been presented to individuals and groups for extending a helping hand to others.

Previous recipients have assisted emerging musicians, the hearing impaired, new migrants, young mothers, arthritis and stroke sufferers, sports clubs, as well as the arts and environmental projects.

The categories for this year's Civic Awards are community, citywide, charitable organisations, community groups, youth and business.

Previous recipients of a Civic Award are not eligible for nomination, but those who received an Award of Merit under the former Birkenhead City Council scheme are.

Nominations are due by Wednesday, January 18, and will be judged by council's elected members and representatives from the community newspapers North Shore Times and The Aucklander.

Nomination forms and criteria information are available at the council's libraries and area offices, and by calling Actionline on 486 8600. People can also visit www.northshorecity.govt.nz to find out more.

The awards will be presented in April next year.

Entries should be sent to Beverley Rogers, Civic Events Co-ordinator, North Shore City Council, Private Bag 93500, Takapuna, North Shore City.
