Wellington Zoo Prepares for Huge Kids Party

Hundreds of children will be celebrating their youth at Wellington Zoo this Sunday 30 October as part of a national Children’s Day celebration, announced Wellington Zoo Events Co-ordinator, Marina Greco today.

Held annually, Children’s Day celebrations practise five key messages of giving time, praise and encouragement, listening and talking, love and affection and new experiences.

“Children’s Day is the biggest day of the year for Wellington Zoo and we’re going all out to give kids a fun time, lots of action and, at the same time, telling our conservation stories,” says Marina.

Zoo entry will be dropped to $1.00 for children this Sunday (parents and caregivers will still pay normal Zoo admission charges) as a special celebratory price.

Live performances of the Tip Top Popsicle Band and the energetic Plops will be engaging children throughout the day with singing and dancing while Classic Hits fill hungry tummies with free sausages, lollies and drinks.

Internationally acclaimed stilt dancer, EMPRESS Emily will be parading her ‘lions’ through the Zoo, the Zoo’s Elephant House will be open for surprise action and Wellington Zoo Keepers will be talking the conservation talk throughout the day.

“I’m expecting a lot of children to sleep very well on Sunday night after all the excitement at the Zoo. This will be a relaxing night for a lot of parents,” says Marina.

The initial idea for Children’s Day came from a suggestion by the Children’s Commissioner, Ian Hassall, in 1991. The vision of Children’s Day is to see children celebrated, nurtured and treasured by all.

Child, Youth and Family are the implementation agency for Children’s Day.
