Excavation to begin on SH20 Mt Roskill Extension

Transit New Zealand is starting excavation work around Hillsborough Road as part of the first stage of the State Highway 20 Mt Roskill Extension project. As a result, heavy vehicles will be operating in the Hillsborough Road area until March next year. The excavated material will be reused as part of the new motorway construction.

Large dump trucks carrying excavated material will use the Hillsborough Road intersection at the existing termination of SH20, using traffic lights.

Transit does not anticipate major traffic disruption as a result of truck movement at the intersection. However, it suggests motorists take construction works into account and allow for more travel time or use alternative routes to minimise any inconvenience. The Southwestern Motorway (SH20) will continue to operate as normal.

The $169M project will extend the motorway four kilometres through Mt Roskill towards Avondale. This will form an important section of the strategic Western Ring Route that will provide motorists with improved access between Manukau City, Auckland City, Waitakere City and North Shore City. It will also help reduce congestion in central Auckland by enabling traffic to by-pass the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

For more information on the SH20 Mt Roskill Extension project phone 0800 687 675.
