Look for the "A" Grade

Media Release
15 November 2005

Look for the "A" Grade

Manukau City Council will be reminding residents to check food grading certificates with the launch of a new brochure at the Otara Shopping Centre on Thursday 24 November from 11am to 1pm.

The brochure “It’s your choice Look for the A Grade”, was developed in response to an identified lack of public awareness of Council’s food grading system.

Environmental Health Officer Dr. Preeti Prayaga says:

“Council made it compulsory for food premises to prominently display their grading certificates with the aim of lifting food hygiene standards in the City in 2001. At the same time we hoped this would make it possible for customers to make an informed choice about the food premises they wish to shop at”, says Dr Prayaga.

Dr Prayaga noticed a lack of awareness among Otara residents while working on an education programme for the Otara Healthy Kai project. The brochure is Council’s way of addressing this lack of awareness.

“Not only do we want to encourage consumers to make the right choice when deciding which food premises to buy from, we also want to encourage and reward all food premises to operate to a high standard. In this regard we see the role of the consumer as the enforcer through freedom of choice,” says Dr Prayaga.
