Preparations underway for Onewa Road Interchange

Auckland Regional Office

21 November 2005

Media Release

Preparations underway for Onewa Road Interchange Upgrade

Initial enabling work begins tomorrow on the Onewa Road Interchange upgrade project (Tuesday 22 November). This is to prepare for the construction of a new motorway overbridge, as part of the Northern Busway project on Auckland’s North Shore. The new busway will deliver a modern and efficient public transport service for the North Shore and to and from Auckland City.

The enabling work mainly involves the installation of wick drains and construction of earth embankments for the new motorway overbridge embankments. Concrete barriers will also be installed and a temporary site access created

The site area will be cleared of vegetation in preparation for embankment construction and sediment and erosion control measures will be implemented.

On completion, the interchange upgrade will further reduce bus travel time by providing a dedicated bus lane from Onewa Road on to the motorway and the Harbour Bridge. In the future, it will also be possible for High Occupancy Vehicles (HOVs) to travel down an extended transit lane on Onewa Road and have priority onto the motorway.

The work is not expected to cause any disruption to traffic or motorists using the interchange.

Transit New Zealand thanks all motorists in advance for their cooperation.
