Motueka based community and environmental group CommunityAction for People and Planet commend the Nelson City Councils Policy Committee for supporting our call for the reintroduction of bottle deposits. We hope that other Councils will follow suit
We recently presented a petition bearing 2033 signatures to Nelson and Tasman District Councillors, calling on them to advocate for a return to bottle deposits on a national level.
“The NCC Policy Committee’s support for this commonsense proposal shows good judgement. We encourage other councils to follow their proactive lead in solving their ongoing glass recycling problems.” Said CommunityAction coordinator Duncan Eddy.
“Bottle deposits, linked to bottle washing and reuse, offers an effective, sustainable waste reduction strategy. The voluntary Packaging Accord will expire this month, and no other alternative has been found to tackle glass waste. If councils want a system which reduces both environmental impacts and economic costs, here it is.”
“Councils can either support reintroducing bottle deposits, or continue to prop up an unworkable system with ratepayers money.” Said Mr Eddy.
