Mayor Calls for Water Savings
Mayor Calls for Water Savings
Rodney’s mayor John Law is calling on residents and visitors to the district to conserve water after one of the driest Novembers in 60 years.
Mr Law says that whilst there is no immediate cause for concern, the water supply system could struggle to cope if savings are not made.
He says the council is doing its part by minimizing irrigation of its parks and reserves, and funding an extensive water saving campaign in local media. The council has also erected water saving “gauges” throughout the district which indicate whether there is a need for additional savings. This summer for the first time the council is also publishing on its website (www.rodney.govt.nz) daily water usage graphs for each of the main populations centres supplied directly from Rodney’s Water’s monitoring stations.
The council’s media manager, Mike Isle, says the council is going “all out” to involve the community in the water savings campaign, and that includes using all avenues to inform everybody of the current state of supply.
He says savings are something all of the family can be involved in, and often it is the kids who take the initiative in getting households into the routine of saving.
Mr Isle says the council will be running more ads with savings tips, as well as putting on the council website the best tips received from the public. Anybody who has a good water saving idea can email it to the council at kgordon@rodney.govt.nz or by mail to Kim Gordon, Rodney District Council, Private Bag 500, Orewa.
