Westfield’s vision for Newmarket gains support
Westfield has gained support from the Auckland City Council Hearing Committee for the initial part of their vision for retailing in Newmarket.
“The approval by Council of these developments proposed by Westfield is a significant milestone . We can now work to deliver this vision for Newmarket ensuring the urban fabric of the area is enhanced and retained” said Mr Justin Lynch, General Manager - Development, Westfield New Zealand.
Newmarket is synonymous with superior retail environment and under the Westfield plans for the Nuffield Street and Two Double Seven areas the future of Newmarket is firmly secured as an eclectic mix of local and international brands . This offers a superior shopping destination for the discerning Eastern Suburbs shoppers and indeed the whole of Auckland.
The Nuffield development includes the former AEPB building. This landmark building will be restored with the buildings being retrofitted into modern offices with retail on the ground floor. The sheds and old warehouse on the other side of Nuffield Street will be refurbished to accommodate the most recent trends in retail, food and fashion.
The Nuffield Street project will become an iconic main street precinct offering a cosmopolitan mix of fashion, lifestyle, cafes and restaurants.
The old workshop buildings to the rear of the AEPB building will be developed to make way for 270 parking bays to accommodate the retail customers and office users.
The Southern part of the old Mercury Site will be held for further mixed use development to complement the established High Street end office precinct.
Westfield believes the positive outcome of the hearing is a result of over 4 years of consultation with council and the local community, creating the best possible outcome, and enabling the shared dreamed to become a reality.
