Get On your bike! It’s National Bike Wise Week
Bike Wise Week takes place throughout New Zealand
from 26 February to 5 March. This year Manukau City
Council’s Road Safety team and Leisure Services staff have
organised several events aimed at promoting biking as an
alternative, fun and healthy means of transport:
- Go by
Bike Challenge - Wednesday 1 March: 7am to 9am
Leave the car behind and replace horsepower with pedalpower. Cycle to work stopping off for a free breakfast at Manukau Square hosted by Manukau City Road Safety and the Halberg Trust.
The Halberg Trust in conjunction with
Cycle City will showcase a variety of bikes that have been
modified to meet the needs of children with a disability.
The bikes will be used by pupils of the Manurewa
Intermediate Special Needs Unit during Manukau Road Safety’s
education event later in the day.
- Pohutukawa Coast
Country Ramble – Thursday: 2 March - 6pm start:
Struggling with that New Years resolution to get fit?
Continue to have fun on your bike by joining the Manukau City Veterans Cycle Club on their Country Ramble:
This
8.4 kilometre ramble, designed to encourage budding cyclists
of all ages and fitness levels, starts at Umupuia Reserve at
Duders Beach, Corner of North Road and Maraetai Coast Road,
Clevedon, travels along the beautiful roads of the
Pohutukawa Coast to Maraetai, before returning to the
Reserve where a sausage sizzle and spot prize draw will be
held.
- March Family Fun Day - Saturday 4: 10am – 2 pm:
Dust the cobwebs off that bike sitting in the shed and bring the family along to our fun day at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Build confidence and have some off-road fun on our cycling skills course. There will be free bike checks, plus giveaways and spot prizes for the kids.
Coordinator of
Manukau’s Bike Wise events, Angela James challenges all
people working in and around central Manukau to join in the
Go by Bike Challenge:
“Cycling is a healthy, fun and
environmentally friendly means of transport and recreation.
By getting out of their cars and onto a bike, people can not
only get fit and have fun, but they can help to reduce
pollution, save money on petrol and avoid sitting around in
a traffic jam.”
