Transit Reopens Northbound Lanes Of Mangere Bridge
The northbound lanes of the Mangere Bridge on the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) have been reopened to traffic and the bridge is again operating normally in both directions.
Transit New Zealand Regional Manager, Richard Hancy, says the northbound lanes of the bridge were reopened at 10.15 am this morning following the completion of the first stage of ongoing maintenance work programmed for the next six weeks.
The work involves the installation of six complex joints necessary to maintain the safety of the bridge.
Mr Hancy says the bridge was able to be opened earlier than planned because the installation of the nine metre long, 10 tonne joint had occurred without any unforeseen problems occurring.
He says Transit will be revisiting its work schedule for the installation of the remaining five joints – each of which required lengthy and continuous activity to complete. ‘It’s a difficult job and we want it to go ahead with as little disruption to traffic as possible,’ he says.
