Expect delays on Fanshawe Street

Night-time road works on Fanshawe Street beginning this Sunday, 26 February may cause delays for some motorists.

Fanshawe Street will be resurfaced between Beaumont Street and Daldy Street as part of the council's $16 million road widening, bus lane extension and resurfacing project.

The work will temporarily reduce Fanshawe Street to two lanes in each direction for all traffic at night (between 7.30pm and 6am) until mid March.

Auckland City's Transport and Urban Linkages Committee chairperson, Councillor Richard Simpson asks Aucklanders for their co-operation.

"We recognise Fanshawe Street is many motorists' gateway to Auckland's CBD. It's a hard working road, with over 40,000 vehicles travelling along its length," says Mr Simpson.

"Fanshawe Street's capacity and safety improvements are nearly completed, and we are taking this opportunity to improve the road's surface for travellers, further enhancing safety on this busy road.

"We have scheduled the work at night to reduce the disruption the resurfacing work may create for motorists, but ask for Aucklanders' patience as the work continues over the next few weeks," says Mr Simpson.

Where possible, Auckland City asks motorists to consider alternative forms of transport such as buses or ferries, or alternative routes.

Weather permitting, the resurfacing work will be completed early in March.

Another change for motorists will be the introduction of a permanent right turn ban from Fanshawe Street into Beaumont Street from mid March 2006.

"We have restricted the turning movements at the Fanshawe and Beaumont street intersection to reduce time waiting at the traffic lights as well as improving driver safety," says Mr Simpson.

Access to Westhaven and the surrounding area will be via Daldy or Halsey streets.
