Personal Attacks Are Not Going to Get Transmission Gully Built!

“Personal attacks on Wellington Mayor Prendergast and her Council do nothing to advance a regional consensus on the construction of Transmission Gully Motorway” says Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO, Charles Finny. Commenting on recent statements from a local MP, Charles Finny commented “he was confident that when Wellington City Councillors had time to digest the full facts, and the complex issues raised in last week’s report by the Western Corridor Sub-Committee, Wellington City would reconsider its position, and get in behind the region’s discussions with Central Government on how to fund this essential infrastructure investment.”

“Wellington has had just one week to consider the Sub-committee’s report. Mayor Prendergast outlined her reasons for being unable to support the Sub-committee’s report to the Regional Land Transport Committee on Monday. Her position is completely understandable. The Chamber respects her position, so should the region’s elected leaders,” Charles Finny continued.

Charles Finny concluded his comments by suggesting that all MPs and others with strong views on Transmission Gully take note of the positions taken by Porirua Mayor Jenny Brash, Lower Hutt Mayor David Ogden, Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy and Kapiti’s Alan Milne. They too could have been publicly critical of their Wellington counterpart. They have chosen not to. “In doing so they are showing the leadership qualities that the region needs, if we are to pull together to solve the Western coridor transport needs.”

For the record the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce is strongly supportive of Transmission Gully.

Charles Finny was one of the five members of the Sub-committee appointed by the Wellington Regional Land Transport Committee and Transit New Zealand to review evidence and hear submissions on the Western Corridor Land Transport proposal.
