Trees being removed to ensure safety
Auckland City plans to remove two seriously damaged macrocarpa trees in Ostend Domain on Waiheke Island.
The trees were damaged on 3 March when a neighbouring 20-metre macrocarpa fell in high winds, clipping a vehicle travelling up Wharf Road.
Auckland City staff have decided to remove the two trees in close proximity to ensure public safety.
Auckland City arborist, Simon Cook, says the removal of the trees will be a sad loss to the community, but is the safest approach to take.
“The damaged trees are at risk of falling so it’s imperative that we get this fixed so people can use that part of the domain safely again.”
Mr Cook says the three large macrocarpas will be milled on site and the timber will be used to make outdoor furniture for the island.
The trees will be removed by Island Tree Care from 19 April, weather depending. The area will be replanted with new trees.
