Aotea Square to be covered in carpet
Don’t be surprised if you see carpet laid out as rooms in a house in Aotea Square from 19 April until 5 May as part of Auckland City’s Living Room series.
The installation, called Axminster, uses different sections of Axminster carpet to create the feeling that a house has been transplanted into the square.
Axminster producer Fleur Palmer, a senior lecturer of Spatial Design at Auckland University of Technology, says the installation aims to take private rooms into a public space.
“Aucklanders like to renovate and do-up their homes, but this fascination with modern décor means the traces of previous occupants are often eliminated. With Axminster, each room signified by the carpet acts as a footprint of the original domestic space the carpet is from,” says Ms Palmer.
The Axminster installation gets its name from the famous Axminster Carpets, which were first produced at Axminster in 1755. Since then the word Axminster has become world-renowned for style, luxury and elegance. Carpets from Axminster can be found in some of the finest hotels in the world, royal residences, on the aircraft of major global airlines and in thousands of homes. The carpet was extremely popular in New Zealand throughout the 1970s.
Axminster is part of Living Room, a series of installations and activities funded by the CBD targeted rate that seeks to enliven the CBD’s public spaces.
Other happenings taking place in the CBD as part of the Living Room series include Proverbial Auckland, Morning Tea, Multicultimedia, Skeletons in the Closet, Pallet Maze and Musical Bus Stops.
The Living Room series is funded from the CBD targeted rate and is part of the Auckland’s CBD Into the future strategy, which aims to transform Auckland’s CBD into one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres.
