Kindergarten remediation starts tomorrow

Work to decontaminate Ferndale Kindergarten, Mt Albert, will begin tomorrow.

On-site soil testing found elevated levels of contaminants including benzo-a-pyrene across the site. High levels of benzo-a-pyrene, lead and arsenic were found at the surface in an area recently used as a garden for a period of about ten weeks.

Fill recently imported to form the garden will be re-tested to determine its origin. It is not yet known whether this new fill has contributed to contamination in that area.

Most of the original fill in the garden area appears to be derived from a combination of horticultural and industrial activity.

"Parents have been advised that although some chemical levels were high, the limited time children were exposed to the contaminants meant health risks were low," Deputy Mayor, Dr Bruce Hucker said today.

"Remediation of the site involves removing all soil to a depth of half a metre, replacing it with clean fill and new landscaping while preserving some existing trees in accordance with the wishes of parents."

Interim results from soil tests at the Mt Albert Playcentre in Phyllis Street have revealed moderate contamination at levels similar to several other pre-school sites. The results and information on health issues will be distributed to parents at a private meeting on Wednesday next (26 April).
