Motions Creek catchment stormwater pipeline work

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL

MEDIA RELEASE

5 May 2006

Motions Creek catchment stormwater pipeline work nearing completion

The last major stage of construction of the Motions catchment stormwater pipeline is due to begin next month, with Auckland City awarding the tender to Harkers Underground Construction Ltd.

The work will be carried out in the area from Water Street to Boston Road, Western Springs and involves the temporary construction of three access shafts to enable the installation of 285 metres of two-metre diameter concrete pipe.

The tender amount accepted from Harkers Underground Construction Ltd is $3,056,000.

The Motions Creek catchment has a complex drainage network, with major work carried out over a number of years to resolve significant drainage issues. Eighty-five houses and 15 commercial properties in the area are prone to flooding and over 80 combined sewer overflows cause pollution of Motions Creek and Waitemata Harbour.

“Auckland City recognises the flooding issues which have occurred in the area in past years have affected residents’ properties and we’re pleased that the pipeline that will fix this problem is nearing completion,” says Councillor Neil Abel, chairperson of the Works and Services Committee.

The work is expected to take four months to complete.
