Get a taste of Multicultimedia
A multimedia installation showing Auckland's unique identity will be displayed on plasma screens in the window of Farmers Queen Street as part of Auckland City's Living Room series.
Multicultimedia, which looks at cultural diversity and multicultural harmony in Auckland, is curated by Jin Hong and is made up of two documentaries.
Each documentary has two parts which play simultaneously on the plasma screens. The first features 20 people from different cultures singing Pokarekare Ana on one monitor, while the other plays individual interviews with those people about their lives in Auckland.
The second documentary follows a young woman on a typical day for her in the CBD. One monitor shows the day from the woman's perspective using footage she has shot herself on a handicam over the course of the day. The other screen shows footage shot by Mr Hong as he follows her around the CBD.
Mr Hong says the Multicultimedia installation aims to make people think about the interaction between their individual cultures and the lives they lead in Auckland.
"Although all human eyes are different in terms of colour and shape, our perception of Auckland is similar. This visual display shows Auckland's unique and diverse identity, and reflects on how Aucklanders can live in multicultural harmony," says Mr Hong.
Multicultimedia will screen from 19 May until 1 June and is part of Living Room, a series of installations and activities funded by the CBD targeted rate that seeks to enliven the CBD's public spaces.
Other happenings taking place in the CBD as part of the Living Room series include Proverbial Auckland, Morning Tea, Skeletons in the Closet and Living Lamps.
The Living Room series is part of the Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy, which aims to transform Auckland's CBD into one of the world's most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres.
