Council Buys Land for Kumeu Cemetery

The Rodney District Council has announced the purchase of seven acres of land in Old Railway Road Kumeu for a new cemetery to serve western Rodney.

The purchase from the Kumeu Baptist Church would enable a cemetery to be developed with at least a 50-year capacity, based on the current range of internment options. The Council owned and developed cemetery at Wainui with its landscaping and memorial gardens is a possible model for its future development. The cemetery will adjoin the proposed new Kumeu Baptist Church to be developed within a park-like setting.

The council’s manager for strategic development, Paul White, says the purchase is still subject to an approval to a boundary adjustment to create a new title. However, this is not expected to be difficult to achieve, he says.

Rodney’s mayor, John Law, has welcomed the announcement.

He says that, although it will be “some years” before the cemetery becomes operational while planning and development issues are worked through, local Western Ward councillors had shown commendable foresight by supporting the purchase now as an investment for the future.

Mr Law says a significant amount of the purchase cost will be recovered from the sale of the house-block on the property.

“I think the parties to this agreement, and the council officers and advisors who facilitated it, should be congratulated on arriving at an excellent outcome for the community.”
