Review Identifies Rates Underpayments
A regular review of the Manukau City Council’s rating database has identified 1700 properties city-wide which have been undercharged for rates.
The properties involved have been rated for single dwellings on the land rather than two or in some cases three, dwellings.
“The 1700 ratepayers involved will be rated for the full amount for this year,” Geoff Foster, chief financial officer, says.
“All affected ratepayers will be able to stage their payments, to help ensure the additional amount does not impose a financial burden,” Mr Foster says.
The additional rates owing were identified in a review of the rates database information and total around $1.6 million.
“We regularly review the database information to double-check that information such as additional dwellings are accounted for in the rates billing.
“These affected customers have added household units or flats, or ‘granny-flats’ to their properties and the rebilling will bring their rating in line with all other city ratepayers.”
The amended rates assessments and invoices are being sent out now, and will be due on 25 May. However, those unable to pay the total amount at the due date can contact the council through the Call Centre on 09 262 5104 to arrange a payment system.
