No track across tracks

No track across tracks

The Kapiti Coast District Council and the owners and operators of the railway lines, On Track, will work together on ways to solve across-track access issues in various parts of the district, Council’s Group Manager Community Assets & Services, Rob Williams, said today.

“We’ve met with On Track about their requirement for closure of several long term informal access ways across the tracks and we understand their concerns and their legal position to keep pedestrians away from rail tracks.

“Unfortunately the result of the closure of some of the old gates and formal and informal gaps in fences is that people are being forced to use the side of the State Highway in Paraparaumu; this is arguably no safer than walking across or alongside the railway tracks but the law is not as restrictive in this case.

“We will work with On Track and with Transit to find safer access ways and solutions as quickly as possible.

“In the meantime, we urge pedestrians to take care when walking on the side of the State Highway or any road. Make sure you are visible by wearing light or reflecting clothes and choose safe crossing points.”
