First Youth Expo a success

First Youth Expo a success

Kapiti Coast’s first Youth Expo held at Paraparaumu’s Skate N Blade last Saturday (May 20) attracted a crowd of more than 500 to a varied programme of entertainment, exhibitions and events.

Organised by Kapiti Coast District Council, in conjunction with Voices Against Violence, the event was supported by a wide range of Kapiti youth and other groups.

MC for the day was former NZ Idol contestant, Luke Whaanga and he provided the links for a programme that started with music from The Highlanders and Magnum Opus, dancing from hip hop performers and impromptu performances from stall holders and event attendees.

Groups who took part included Kapiti Skills who provided barbeque sausages for most of the day, Kapiti College photography students, Westpac Waikanae, Council of Youth in Kapiti, Kapiti Youth Services, Kapiti Coast District Council’s Road Safety Coordinator, Youth to Xcell, Sport Kapiti, G&H Trading, the Police and CYF’s Strengthening Families.

One stall offered anti-bullying temporary tattoos and an interactive graffiti art mural was painted to be used as a backdrop for future youth events in Kapiti.

Event organiser, Kapiti Coast District Council’s Youth Coordinator, Bronagh Moloney, said she was very pleased with the results of the first event and she believes the Youth Expo has the potential to grow bigger and better in future years.
