Museum announces activity-packed family festival
Something old. Something new. And, every day, lots to
do. That’s the driving spirit behind Auckland Museum’s first
annual Stevenson’s Winter Family Festival, which starts on
Saturday, July 1 and runs until July 16.
“We’ve programmed a wide range of imaginative activities to involve, inform and entertain mums, dads, grandparents, and children of all ages,” said Jo Lees, the Museum’s Festival co-ordinator.
“Add these to our currently running special events and the always interesting general exhibitions, and there’s no reason why a family couldn’t spend most of the holidays enjoying the warmth and endless fascination on offer under one big, very weatherproof roof.”
Highlights
of the Stevenson’s Winter Family Festival
include:
• StorySpace - Exploring New Zealand’s people,
land and history through stories, play and make-believe in
the new StorySpace within the Museum’s Treasures & Tales
section.
• Dinosaurs Alive! - Once-in-a-million-years
romance, as Delaurus and the Museum’s new male dryosaur
finally get together.
• Bring a Bug Friday – Stevenson’s
Dinomite Club members get to bring their (secured) bugs for
the curator to identify.
• Walk On the Wide Side - Family
Trail expeditions through New Zealand’s Natural History
Galleries and Maori Court.
• Matariki Workshops – A
chance for visitors to make their own pois and decorate
their own sets of titi torea sticks.
• Lots of musical
activities.

for more information.
Ms Lees says the winter festival is
a great opportunity for people to become members of the
museum.
A family comprising two adults and up to six children living at home can join for only $50 and lasts for a year. Another option is the Kid Plus membership – when a child can join for $30.00 and bring any adult along they wish.
Membership benefits include no request for an admission donation; discounts at the Museum Shop and BB’s Café; discounted entry to charged exhibitions; advance notice of events and exhibitions; free subscription to ‘MQ’ magazine; Stevenson’s Dinomites Club membership for all children aged up to 13 years; discounted entry to children’s programmes; free admission to Dinosaurs Alive! Performances; and more. Full details are available on the Museum’s website: www.aucklandmuseum.com
“In fact, there’s still time to apply for a family membership and qualify to take advantage of the exclusive, members-only events and other benefits that we’re offering during the Stevenson’s Winter Family Festival,” said Ms Lees.
The Family Festival premieres with an exclusive opening party for Museum Family Members on Friday, June 30. Guests will enjoy a preview tour of the brand-new StorySpace, followed by a family feast with the dinosaurs in attendance.
Dinomite Club members who visit the Museum during the Stevenson’s Winter Family Festival will receive special Museum Goodie Bags stuffed with treats and treasures, and a secret code to use on the Museum website.
