Waterfront partners on track to deliver vision

Auckland City Council, Auckland Regional Council, Auckland Regional Holdings and Ports of Auckland say they are all constructively participating in a process to deliver on the principles of the Waterfront Vision, completed last year with extensive public input.

The major parties involved in plans to revitalise Auckland’s waterfront say they are making good progress and are working positively together.

In a joint statement today all parties confirm they are strongly supportive of one another and of working together towards a world class development on Wynyard Point.

“Without the cooperative approach there could be no redevelopment of this area of the waterfront. The various parties have shown great flexibility in considering different funding, ownership and design outcomes, and I am personally very pleased with progress” says Mike Lee, Chairman of Auckland Regional Council.

“There is no secret deal. What is taking place is normal commercial negotiations. ”

Auckland Mayor Dick Hubbard says: “All options are on the table. We are working well together and we are confident this will result in a workable and inspirational redevelopment along the wider waterfront.”

The parties are responding to calls and submissions from the public for a single agency to oversee and coordinate the redevelopment of the waterfront.
Auckland Regional Holdings (ARH) chair Judith Bassett says: “ARH has made a substantial investment in taking full ownership of Ports of Auckland to facilitate progress and is delighted that the long held dream of Aucklanders to revitalise the waterfront will become a reality.”

“Ports of Auckland has invested millions of dollars in international design advice, and wants to ensure a first class outcome on the Tank Farm area. We are helping make this possible by finding alternative locations for some of the significant industries and activities located there,” says Neville Darrow, Ports of Auckland Chairman.

The two Councils will notify plan changes in a few weeks, which will enable the staged redevelopment of the waterfront area. There will be a period of further public consultation before the new plans come into effect.
