Lieder at the library: Helen Medlyn live in concert
Auckland City Libraries invites you to enjoy one of New Zealand's favourite sopranos, Helen Medlyn, in a breathtaking programme of lieder (songs) by Schumann, Debussy, Britten and Mahler at the Central City Library on 21 July. She will be accompanied by pianist Penny Dodd.
The programme includes Frauenliebe und Leben by Schumann, Debussy’s Chansons de Bilitis, A Charm of Lullabies by Britten and Mahler’s Two Ruckert Lieder.
Helen's diverse body of work ranges from creating and performing acclaimed cabaret shows to performances with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, NBR New Zealand Opera and the Auckland Philharmonia; and appearances in the Sydney Opera House with Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
In recent years, Helen has made her American debut with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, has understudied for the English National Opera in London and has sung in outdoor concerts such as the Sky City Starlight Symphony and the Candlelight Opera Concert.
Helen is also a 2002 Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate, and has been described as the ‘Dawn Upshaw of New Zealand’, ‘a national treasure’ and ‘New Zealand’s favourite diva’.
Helen says:
“Auckland City Libraries is a treasure trove in which I delve for interesting, unusual, sometimes little-known songs as well as an extraordinary source of sheet music for recordings and information about operas, arias, vocal works and art songs.”
“I like the idea that I can sing in the library as a kind of tribute to its wealth of material so this performance is my chance to say thank you”.
