Work continues on auxiliary lane from Newton Road to Western Springs
Transit New Zealand is relocating temporary safety barriers as work continues on the construction of an additional lane on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) between Newton Road and the Western Springs off-ramp.
Starting tomorrow, the westbound lanes will be narrowed and barriers moved, giving space for an extra lane and bus shoulder to be added. When completed, the shoulder will be used as a bus priority lane during peak evening traffic. The project is part of ongoing improvements taking place on Auckland’s Central Motorway Junction.
Most of the work will be carried out during the day to minimise disruption for the local Kingsland community. There will be some night closures on over the next month, except for Friday and Saturday nights. The closures will allow for the moving of the barriers and also for the starting of preparatory work to install overhead gantries for a new traffic management system.
Earthworks to stabilise the area, as well as drainage, barrier installation and paving will also be undertaken as part of the work. When the work is completed, permanent concrete barriers will be placed along the edge of the new lane to improve safety and help reduce traffic noise. Construction is scheduled for completion at the end of October.
