Historic Milestone In Manukau Governance

Manukau City Council demonstrated its commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi last night with the appointment of four Taura Here representatives to Manukau’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi Committee.

The four successful representatives chosen at a nomination hui earlier this month are:

Rose Whaiapu
George Ngatai
Barry Tumai
Rangi McLean

The role of the committee is to provide input into council policy development and decision-making processes.

Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis, who will chair the committee, is looking forward to working closely with Maori communities throughout the city.

“This is a bold step. The committee is unique in that council approved equal membership of elected members and appointed representatives on a standing committee, something that has not been seen in any other council in New Zealand.”

“I am proud of the action taken last night. I believe it demonstrates once again council’s long-standing commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Manukau.”

The inaugural meeting of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi Committee is scheduled for
Thursday 20 July 2006.
