Enthusiastic response on Mt Albert cycle lanes

Auckland City's consultation on proposed cycle lanes in Mt Albert has generated a substantial response, with nearly 250 people taking time to have their say.

New cycle lanes are proposed along both sides of Mt Albert Road, between New North and Sandringham roads, and along a section of Carrington Road.

Senior transport planner Daniel Newcombe says he and the project team are pleased with the proactive response.

"It was really great to get such a large number of detailed submission forms," he says.

The consultation deadline was extended from Friday, 2 June, to Sunday, 2 July, in response to requests for more time to consider the draft design.

Mr Newcombe says that while a number of people opposed the removal of parking along one side of the road, the majority expressed support for cycle lanes in general.

"Submissions raised issues such as pedestrian safety and driver visibility. We can now take a fresh look at the design based on local feedback," he says.

Auckland City invited Aucklanders to make a submission online or by post. More than 900 letters and submission forms were sent to local residents, property owners and businesses directly inviting them to have their say.

The project team will consider the feedback and revise the design where possible. The revised design for the Mt Albert cycle lanes will be presented at a public meeting, with the date and venue to be announced in coming weeks.

The proposal will be presented to the Eden/Albert Community Board for endorsement, before it is submitted to the council's Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.
