Councillor Gilmour Goes Back to School
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 18 July 2006

Kiwi comedian and Councillor for Waitakare Ewen 'Westie' Gilmour recently went back to school – Ford Advanced Drivers School, that is.

Seated in his distinctive Rapid yellow Falcon XR8 Ute, Gilmour refreshed his driving skills at a one day Ford Advanced Drivers School practical course that taught accident avoidance, car control and defensive driving skills.

"It was a really beneficial day for me and has certainly made me a safer driver," said Gilmour

"I was very interested to learn that incorrect tyre pressure is the biggest cause of rollover accidents in cars – I also found it really useful to know how my Falcon Ute would react in an emergency situation," said Gilmour.

"The overall objective of the Course is to help develop an Avoidance Attitude (the principle of Defensive Driving), backed up with good practical skills by placing them in emergency situations in a controlled environment at safe speeds," said Mr John Brown, Managing Director

Ford has been the main supporter of the Advanced Driver's School since its formation in 1987, and has been the key supplier of vehicles which have helped thousands of people learn and improve on safe driving techniques and habits.

"We have trained upwards of 35,000 people over the past 19 years, and currently train more than 3000 drivers annually. We offer driver education at sixteen locations nationwide, and have trained individual drivers and corporate groups as well as teaching the finer points of driving to Ministers of the Crown and the All Blacks."

"Motorists only have one chance to react when put in a potential accident situation. It's important that people learn what to do and how to do it to and give themselves an increased chance of accident avoidance," said Mr Brown.
