Aucklanders for Aucklanders

A game of golf with Marc Ellis, racing around the track in a Formula Callenge V8 with Lisa Lewis, and a painting donated by artist Misery have been the top draw-cards in the fundraising Auckland City Mission Aucklanders for Aucklanders auction on Trade Me.

Close to half a million people checked out the 107 separate offers on the site during the three weeks of the auction. Marc Ellis attracted the highest number of actual bids – 534 – followed by Misery, and then Shortland Street actors Laura Hill (Toni) and Nicole Thompson (Scarlett), with their offer of a tour of the set. But the top bid went to designer Kate Dowman. Her Orchid Collection wedding dress fetched $2, 600, while a second wedding dress, worn for a Shortland Street wedding, brought in another $1, 310.

All up the auction, which closed on Sunday, will have raised around $50,000 for the Mission’s Winter Appeal, the money going towards food, clothing and other services for the city’s most marginalized families and individuals.

“It has been great seeing Aucklanders coming together –both those who have donated their time and services and the thousands who have bid for them – to make life easier for people who are struggling,”says Auckland City Missioner Diane Robertson.

The Winter Appeal continues until August 14. Food, clothing or bedding can be collected by phoning 3774322, or dropped off at the Mission, 140 Hobson St, Auckland City.
