AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE

7 September 2006

David Lange memorial art work labour of love

Auckland City's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee yesterday endorsed the proposal for a memorial art work in Otahuhu, the late Prime Minister, David Lange's birthplace.

Former Prime Minister, David Lange, will be fondly remembered with a significant memorial proposed for the Otahuhu recreation precinct in Mason Avenue. "This will be a fitting tribute to Otahuhu's political father," says Councillor Penny Sefuiva, Chair of the council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee.

"This is a significant day for Otahuhu," says Ms Councillor Penny Sefuiva. "It is an honour to confirm a memorial to a great person, who did so much for the people of Otahuhu and the people of New Zealand."

The David Lange Memorial Trust has been established to fundraise and manage the project. Trustees include Andrew Beyer, Margaret Pope and Graeme Mullins, and project manager Deborah White of Whitespace.

The trust will work in partnership with the council to commission an art work of major significance to be enjoyed by the people of Otahuhu and which will attract visitors with an interest in New Zealand's social and political history.

The committee recommended that the location of the art work be identified in consultation with the David Lange Memorial Trust.
