eLGAR wins Maori Language Week Award

Auckland City Libraries, in association with Waitakere, Rodney, North Shore and Manukau libraries, have won the libraries category of the Maori Language Week Awards 2006 in Wellington last night.

The award was for the launch of Putomohio, an online catalogue in Te Reo Māori, as part of Te Wiki o te Reo (Māori Language Week 24 to 30 July 2006). The award was the result of work carried out by the eLGAR libraries (Libraries for a Greater Auckland Region).

Putumōhio is the Māori version of the libraries’ online catalogue that can be accessed via the regional libraries’ individual websites where customers can search for thousands of books, CDs, DVDs, reference material and much more.

The meaning of the word Putumōhio is a person who gathers and accumulates knowledge to enhance ones life.

Geoff Chamberlain, eLGAR Chairperson and North Shore Libraries’ service manager, says:

“The award recognises the work of the team who worked on creating Putumohio as well as acknowledging the importance of Māori in the everyday life of Aucklanders as well as anyone who accesses the eLGAR library catalogues.”
