Mayor remembers former city chief

North Shore City Mayor George Wood is one of many mourning the council’s first chief executive, Wayne Tisdall, who passed away at his Campbells Bay home earlier today.

A Justice of the Peace, Mr Tisdall served his community in various roles during a distinguished career.

He was city manager of the former Takapuna City Council until local government amalgamation in November 1989.

He was appointed to lead the new North Shore City Council and retired two years later.

Wayne Tisdall returned as a city councillor for the Takapuna ward in 1995, serving three years on the George Gair-led council.

He also served on the Takapuna Community Board from 1995-98 and 2001 until his death. His fellow board members appointed him chairman, a role he relinquished only when he fell ill.

George Wood described Mr Tisdall as a true gentleman who could see all sides of an issue.

“He always made a valuable contribution in whichever role he played,” says the mayor who ordered the city’s flags to be lowered to half mast in a mark of respect for Mr Tisdall.

Deputy chairman of the Takapuna Community Board, Andrew Williams, says his friend and colleague was “a top bloke”.

“Wayne gave dedicated service to our city and region for a great many years. He will be fondly remembered for his contribution to many activities around the North Shore and will be greatly missed.

“Wayne Tisdall passed away in the early hours of this morning, following a long and determined battle this year with a brain tumour. He was at home in Campbells Bay with wife Noelene and members of his family,” Mr Williams says.
