Aucklanders encouraged to get active

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL

MEDIA RELEASE

3 October 2006

Aucklanders encouraged to get active

Raising the physical activity levels of adults and young people is the aim of AkActive Parks and Places programme, which kicks off this month.

A great range of community-based activities in facilities, parks and open spaces across the city will be on offer for no or low cost.

Activities include tai chi, disc golf, dancing, yoga, self defence, African drumming, pilates, walking and tennis.

AkActive is a joint initiative of Auckland City, Sport Auckland, ProCare Network Auckland, YMCA (Auckland) and Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC), and is designed to motivate Aucklanders to increase their physical activity.

Just one third of Auckland adults are physically active for more than 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Chair of Auckland City’s Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, Councillor Penny Sefuiva, encourages Aucklanders to take part in activities happening in their communities.

“It is often too easy for many of us to find an excuse not to include physical activity in our daily routine.

“AkActive Parks and Places is a great opportunity to try something new for free or a small cost. The programme will make it easier to open the door to an active lifestyle and feel good about your health, while enjoying the great open spaces and facilities we have on our doorstep,” she says.

Auckland City currently provides more than 800 parks and reserves, 11 pools and nine recreation centres. The council is getting on with providing these sport and recreation assets to promote lifestyle choices and build stronger communities.

As well as encouraging participation in the activities, the AkActive Parks and Places programme also aims to encourage better use of these facilities.
