Celebrating 50 years of the Roxburgh Dam
The public open day marking 50 years of operation of the iconic Roxburgh Dam will be held this Saturday 21 October between 11am and 4pm.
Tours of the dam will be held throughout the day, with water run through the dam’s spillway gates on every hour between 11am and 4pm.
The Governor General is the guest of honour and he will make a brief speech at the dam at midday.
There will be a range of historical displays throughout the dam and videos running to show the construction and operation of the dam over the last 50 years.
After the open day there will be an opportunity to attend the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre for a showing of a short film from the New Zealand Archives of old footage of the Roxburgh Dam. This film runs for about 20 minutes and will be shown progressively between 4pm and 5.30pm.
There is also an informal evening function for current and ex-staff employed since the dam was commissioned. The function will be held at the Roxburgh Trotting Club starting at 6pm – people wishing to attend must register by contacting Cathy at cathy.marsh[at]contact-energy.co.nz
