Media Release
Wednesday 25 October 2006

Sylvia Taylor wins Mangere by-election

Mangere Residents and Ratepayers candidate Sylvia Taylor has defeated seven other contenders to win the by-election for the Mangere ward of Manukau City Council.

The Mangere vacancy on council was created by the fraud conviction and subsequent resignation of former councillor James Papali’i in August this year.

Sylvia Taylor received 3110 votes, 464 votes clear of her nearest rival.

A resident of Mangere Bridge for the last five years, Sylvia Taylor’s supplied candidate statement noted that she is currently chairperson and acting manager of the Disabled Citizens Society and has a professional background in commercial and industrial real estate. Her listed interests included youth, combating graffiti and crime, seeking less liquor outlets and developing tourism in Mangere.

Electoral Officer John Skelton says voter turn-out for the by-election was 26.88 per cent. This compares with a 36.6 turn-out in the Mangere ward for the 2004 local authority elections and 30.34 per cent for the last by-election in Mangere in 2003.

The official by-election results were:
