Architectural accolades for Manukau’s community facilities

Manurewa Aquatic Centre - Ngaa Mahi a Rehia, along with Te Matariki Clendon Community Centre and Library, have been recognised in the 2006 New Zealand Institute of Architects Local Awards held late last week.

Both buildings won in the Community and Cultural section for their designer Jasmax Ltd.

Judges commented that Te Matariki provided “a bold form with a central entrance foyer also serving an existing adjacent hall, this enterprising community library invites users, especially children and young people, in with an environment that’s welcoming and exciting.”

While Manurewa Aquatic Centre - Ngaa Mahi a Rehia was “a really simple building, effective yet inspiring; an asset that the local community can use and enjoy at no cost”

The NZIA Resene Local Awards for Architecture were established to celebrate the innovation, creativity and excellence of architecture projects nationwide.

The panel of judges visited each project, which were then evaluated against criteria such as the relationship of the building to its site and context, design quality, building form, structure and spatial qualities. User satisfaction, the use of colour and materials, and environmental aspects were also taken into account.

Director of Community for Manukau City Council, Ian Maxwell is delighted with the recognition from NZIA:

“The awards, the latest in a long line for Manukau City Council community buildings, show we continue to maintain a level of excellence, in providing modern functional attractive buildings, which proudly reflect the community they serve.”
