Five Kapiti Coast groups receive community awards

Five Kapiti Coast groups, significant for their volunteer involvement and overall contribution to the Kapiti Coast community received Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards and cheques for $500 each at a ceremony in Paraparaumu this evening.

The Overall Winner on the Kapiti Coast was Project K – Kapiti who received a further cheque for $500.

The groups entered the competition for the awards in five separate categories.

In the Heritage & Environment category the winner was the Waitohu Stream Care Group for their extensive and successful work since their establishment in 1999 to bring the badly polluted stream back to health.

The keenly contested Health & Well-Being category was won by the Otaki Women’s Health Group who provide an extensive range of health services to the women and men of Otaki.

Paekakariki Surf Lifeguards won the Sport & Leisure category for the Kapiti Coast for their work in providing training for young men and women in surf life saving skills and a vital service to the people of Paekakariki.

The Educational & Child Youth Development category covers a range of groups but the winner this year was Project K – Kapiti who provide many Kapiti Coast youngsters with practical life skills and experience as well as the opportunity to be involved with their peers and the community in a positive way.

The Waikanae Music Society numbers more than 540 members and 44 volunteers and they have won the Arts & Culture Category of the competition this year. The Society has been going for 28 years and it aims to bring classical music to the Kapiti Coast, something which it continues to do very successfully.

Each category winner receives a certificate and a cheque for $500 and the opportunity to go forward as the category winner to a regional competition where it can win more money and kudos.
